The forest ones are very realistic - that's exactly what happened in Rumbula massacres in Latvia in 1941... only in November and December. In summer - early fall it happened, too... mostly in Lithuania.

What I cannot grasp is the indifference by the locals.
Eager to profit, they raid the abandoned houses, gather clothing and valuables.
Those in hiding were turned over to the police.
Naked corpses piled high into the mass graves just 5km away!

It is a bit complicated as locals in different places had different attitudes towards Jews. In Baltic countries, Western Ukraine, Western Belarus (former Polish lands) the overwhelming majority supported execution of Jews - so powerful was their anti-Semitism (in Latvia and Lithuania Jews were shot mostly by locals with Germans just observing). In other places, it was usually indifference (there was no love for Jews anywhere in the USSR). No surprise here - Russia has been the most anti-Semitic country in Europe for decades... if not centuries.

No, they were not. Different times, different upbringing, different knowledge, different mentality... just about everything was different back then. Thankfully, humans evolved since than... but not enough to prevent a major war in Europe that now is taking place.
